Sumatra spotlight

Bump Start, one of Class IV’s most popular Single Origin coffees, hails from the Permata Gayo cooperative in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The rich volcanic soil and tropical climate of the Aceh mountains provides the ideal growing conditions for coffee, which have long supported the Gayonese people and the economy of the Aceh province.

Permata Gayo was formed in 2006 by 50 farmers spread across five villages in the Bandar sub-district of the Aceh Province. Today, the Permata Gayo cooperative has approximately 2,700 members; 462 are women. 70% of household income in the Aceh Province comes from the coffee harvest. The cooperative achieved Organic Certification in 2007 and Fairtrade Certification in 2009. It’s important to note that the financial stability provided through the cooperative’s participation in the Fairtrade program has allowed Permata Gayo to reinvest Fairtrade Premiums to support:

  • Women’s education programs in financial management and medical supplies to support mothers and babies during pregnancy.

  • Food programs that ensure farmers and their families don’t go hungry outside the harvest season when there is no income from coffee.

  • Investments in agricultural tools (like portable weeding kits) so farmers can keep their coffee plants healthy without using toxic chemicals.

  • Improvements to coffee processing and storage facilities.

  • Environmental education on soil conservation to help prevent over-farming and soil erosion.

Class IV takes great pride in our commitment to providing customers with only the most ethically sourced and sustainable coffee from farms and farmers who have mastered their craft. Try Bump Start today to celebrate the wonderful coffee-producing region of Indonesia while having a coffee experience you won’t forget!
